For Scotland's own beloved Ali Smith, words are never neutral – they are alive, exuberant, political. Glyph, a dazzling companion to last year's Gliff, is a powerful yet playful anti-war novel set in a state turned hostile to curiosity and understanding. She returns to the Festival today to celebrate stories within stories, language as resistance, and the power of words to confront dark times and and help us see other perspectives. Chaired by Claire Armitstead.
