National borders are an increasing source of friction as many demand their security, cross them seeking refuge, invade over them, or no longer feel at home within them. Esa Aldegheri talks about these human-made faultlines with essayist Rana Dasgupta – who, in After Nations, explores the creation of modern nation states and their present turmoil – and journalist Ece Temelkuran – whose Nation of Strangers weaves an urgent tapestry of exile and displacement, asking what ‘home’ means.
