Alice Hawkins – Working Class Suffragette

(Great-grandson Peter Barratt with Sister Suffragette Ruth Pownall)
Arthur Conan Doyle Centre (The Helen Duncan Room)
16–20 Aug 12.00, 18.00 (depending)
Spoken Word

With oral history passed down over the family generations, Peter gives a stirring and passionate account of his great-grandmother’s hard-fought campaign for the right to vote over 100 years ago. A shoe machinist by trade, lifelong socialist and mother of six, centenary year 2018 marked a bronze statue unveiled of Alice together with her sash, hunger-strike medal and more on display at UK Parliament. Illustrated throughout with her very own suffrage memorabilia, sister suffragette Ruth Pownall adds true theatre to an unmissable spoken word show. **** (The Student). www.alicehawkinssuffragette.co.uk
