For EAF25, Hamish Halley presents a poignant video piece that intertwines two narratives: the intimate act of cleaning his grandparents’ home after their passing and the monumental transition of the Perth Museum’s collection to a new space. Working across textiles, video, and print-making, the installation reflects on custodianship, preservation, loss, and renewal.

Halley is EAF’s first Early Career Artist-in-Residence (formerly PLATFORM). During his 18-month residency, Halley continues to develop his practice, and work with EAF to engage Edinburgh’s communities through workshops, discussions, and participatory events, inviting local audiences to reflect on their own relationships with memory, place, and transformation.

EAF has also been able to offer the Early Career Artist-in-Residence a residency space in the Borders, in partnership with the Hugo Burge Foundation. As this year’s recipient, Halley has developed his festival work during his time there, supported with space for research, reflection, and making.

! Includes discussion of grief, the loss of grandparents, emotional attachment to objects, and reflections on family relationships.

Access

This installation will take place at the EAF Pavilion, which can be accessed via ramp and lift.

The exhibition’s film installation has a small bench seat and headphones for viewing.

The film work is also shown in the museum’s Screening Room, which is up a narrow set of spiral stairs, allowing an alternative viewing space for visitors. As this space is not accessible to all visitors, there will be no content screened here that is not also visible on the second floor.
